How to Style Your Coat Like the Cool Girls This Season

If you’re like me and oftentimes build your fall and winter looks around the coat you want to wear, then these coat styling tips and coat outfit ideas were made for you!

I have to admit, I have a bit of a coat buying problem. A cute coat just does it for me for some reason! So I have a wide variety of coats in my wardrobe. Long, trench, fur, cropped, etc. You name it, I probably have it.

And each type of coat comes with it’s own unique ways that it looks best styled with. We hate an awkwardly paired dress or sweater with the wrong coat! So if you’re looking for some inspo on how to dress cute with a coat on (and of course still keep it cute once the coat comes off!) then you’re going to love these fall and winter coat outfits.

Quick styling rules when styling your coats this season:

Long coats: These basically do the work of an outfit for you, which is exactly why I own approximately eleven of them. Let a little bit of your outfit peek out at the bottom (think a dress hem or wide leg pants) so you don't look like you forgot to get dressed underneath. Belt it at the waist if it's boxy, unless you enjoy looking like a walking rectangle, no judgment either way.

Cropped coats: These are basically made for high waisted everything. Skinny jeans, wide leg trousers, even a midi skirt if you're feeling fancy. Just don't pair a cropped coat with a cropped top unless you want a whole strip of stomach exposed to the elements, which, respectfully, no thank you.

Accessories and layers underneath: A chunky scarf and structured bag take any coat from basic to "did she get dressed up or is this an accident" energy. Underneath, stick to simpler pieces (turtlenecks, slip dresses, plain knits) so the coat stays the star and you don't end up looking like you raided three different clearance racks at once.

And with that - let’s get into the outfit ideas:

Camel Sweater with a Cream Coat and Brown Boots

This one is giving cozy cabin weekend and I am so here for it. A camel sweater under a cream coat keeps things soft and neutral, and the brown boots and beanie throw in enough texture to make it feel intentional.

I love that the color palette stays so simple here because it makes getting dressed almost too easy. Toss on the headscarf and gloves and you have a whole cold weather uniform ready to go.

Burgundy Sweater with a Faux Fur Coat and Jeans

Okay this combo might be one of my favorites in the whole roundup. The burgundy off shoulder sweater brings some drama, and the faux fur coat and jeans balance it out so it does not feel too fussy.

Cream Top with Leather Pants and a Fuzzy Coat

Ever wonder how to make leather pants feel a little less intimidating? Pairing them with a soft fuzzy coat and a simple cream top does exactly that.

The brown croc heels and top handle bag bring in some warmth so the black pants do not read as harsh. This is a great going out look for when you want to feel a little fancy without overthinking it.

Sweater Dress with a Suede Trench and Croc Boots

The suede trench is really the star here and I could not resist building a whole look around it. An oatmeal sweater dress keeps things soft while the croc boots and printed tights bring in some fun texture.
