Easy to Copy Fall Family Photos Color Schemes

If you plan on doing a family photoshoot this fall, then you know the most puzzling part is getting everyone in an outfit they A. actually like and B. coordinates with the rest of the family. So today I am sharing easy to copy fall family photos color schemes to make your life easier!

Whether you’re going for a neutral vibe, moody, bright and airy, there is a color palette here for you.

My biggest tip? Start with one outfit and build everyone else’s based off of that. I usually start with mine LOL. Because I am probably the only one who really cares. And I am also the one doing the work figuring all this out!

But for you, we can just cut to the chase. No need to try and style your whole family perfectly, take one of these color schemes, and pull items from everyone’s closets to match it. There are links to shop all of these pieces as well if you want to grab the exact pieces for any of these looks.

Let’s get into these fall family picture outfits:

Brown, Ivory and a Touch of Burgundy

I am obsessed with this color story for a fall shoot because it leans warm without going full pumpkin spice cliche. The smocked brown maxi on mom, the ruffled ivory dress on the little one, dad's burgundy striped knit polo and that sweet mauve striped romper on the baby all sit together so naturally.

None of the pieces match exactly and that is the whole point, they just live in the same warm family of tones so everyone looks coordinated without looking like a matching set. This is a great option if your photo location has a lot of trees or golden hour light since these browns and creams photograph beautifully against that backdrop.

Denim and White for a Classic Family Look

Denim on denim might sound risky but when you break it up with white it becomes one of the most foolproof combos for a family photo. Mom's oversized denim shirt with wide leg white pants, dad in a plain white polo and jeans, and the kids mixing denim overalls and a chambray shirt all keep this look clean and easy.

This palette works no matter where you are shooting, whether it is a farm, a city street, or somebody's backyard. It also happens to be the easiest one to pull off since chances are half your closet already fits the assignment.

Navy, Plaid and Khaki for a Preppy Family Photo

If you want your family photos to feel a little more classic and put together, this navy and khaki combo is the move. The floral skirt and cardigan on mom, the gingham skirt and cable knit on the littlest one, dad's plaid button down, and the polo shirt on the boy all bring in different patterns but they stay in the same color family so nothing competes for attention.

Mixing patterns like this can feel intimidating but as long as everyone stays in the navy, blue, and khaki zone it just works. This is such a good pick for anyone who wants their photos to feel timeless instead of trendy.

Cream Florals with Olive and Plaid Accents

This one has such a soft, earthy feel to it thanks to that cream floral maxi dress paired with an olive polo and a plaid shirt jacket on the littlest guy. The purple floral top on the girl adds just enough color without pulling away from the overall warm, muted vibe.

I love that this combo still feels seasonal without being heavy, which makes it a great choice if your photos are happening on a warmer fall day. The mix of floral and plaid also adds a lot of visual interest so your photos will not feel flat or one note.

Black and Camel for a Moody Fall Look

Okay this palette is giving editorial in the best way. A black turtleneck maxi dress, a navy sweater, camel pants, and that brown plaid shacket on the little guy all come together for a look that feels a little more elevated than your typical family photo outfit.

If you are shooting somewhere with a more dramatic or moody backdrop, like an overcast day or a wooded area, this palette is going to look incredible. It photographs beautifully in both color and black and white, so keep that in mind if you are debating on editing style.

Ivory and Cream for a Soft Romantic Vibe

Every family needs at least one all cream option in the mix and this is it. The lace tiered dress on mom feels so romantic, and pairing it with the oatmeal sweater on dad and the cream cardigan on the baby keeps the whole family looking effortlessly coordinated.

This is one of my favorite palettes for golden hour shoots since the cream tones just glow in that warm light. It is also a safe pick if you are worried about colors clashing since everything here stays in the same soft neutral family.

Blush, Sage and Cream for a Soft Neutral Mix

This combo is proof that neutrals do not have to mean boring. The blush satin skirt paired with a cream sweater, the sage green sweater on the boy, and that little floral romper peeking out under a cardigan all bring in just enough color to feel intentional.

I really like this one for anyone who wants their photos to feel soft and airy rather than deep and moody. It is a great in between option if bold fall colors feel like too much but you still want more than head to toe neutral.

Rust and Caramel for a Warm Autumn Palette

If you want your photos to scream fall the second someone sees them, this is your palette. The rust colored dress on mom, the mustard striped top on dad, and the striped dress on the little one all lean into those warm caramel and spice tones that just feel like the season.

These colors tend to photograph especially well against changing leaves or a rustic setting, so keep that in mind when picking your location. It is a bolder choice than some of the others on this list but it never feels overdone.

Cream Tones with Denim for Texture

There is something about mixing cream knits and gauzy fabrics with denim that just feels so cozy and lived in. The off shoulder sweater dress, the textured button shirt on dad, and the cable knit cardigan on the baby all bring in different textures while the jeans tie everything together.

This is a great option if your family tends to live in jeans anyway and you want an outfit that still feels a little more special without straying too far from what everyone is comfortable in. The mix of textures also adds a lot of depth to photos, which is something flat, single fabric outfits can sometimes miss.

Burgundy Florals with a Mix of Plaid

This palette feels rich and a little romantic thanks to that burgundy floral halter dress on mom. Pairing it with dad's burgundy striped polo, a plaid shirt jacket on the boy, and a sweet cream floral dress on the littlest one keeps things from feeling too matchy while still tying back to that deep burgundy thread.

Deep jewel tones like this are perfect for later in the fall season when you want your photos to feel a little cozier and more saturated. It is also a great pick if you are hoping to use these photos for holiday cards since that burgundy reads very seasonal.

Extra Tips for Making Your Fall Family Pictures Perfect:

Well, as perfect as you can get with unpredictable children, meltdowns, etc.

  • Don't sleep on accessories, a simple hair bow, a cute little cardigan, or even just rolling dad's sleeves can make an outfit feel a lot more finished without any extra effort.

  • To avoid a meltdown mid shoot, try to schedule around nap time, bring a snack that won't stain, and let your photographer know ahead of time if a certain toy or song helps keep your kid calm. A little bribery in the form of stickers or a treat for after also works wonders.

  • Do a trial run the day before if you can, so you're not discovering a stain or a weird fit five minutes before you need to walk out the door.

No matter which color palette speaks to you, the key is picking pieces that feel like your family and not just a trend you saw on Pinterest. Get everyone dressed, snap a few candids on your phone before you even leave the house, and head into your session feeling confident that you already look the part.
