How to Always Know What to Wear - No Matter What!

We’ve all been there. You’re standing in front of your closet, fully aware that you own plenty of clothes (probably too many TBH), and yet somehow nothing looks right.

You try on three things, hate all of them, and end up super late wearing something you feel just okay about. It is the most frustrating cycle and I swear it happens at the worst possible times!

The thing is, it is not actually about not having enough clothes. Most of us have more than enough. The real problem is not knowing how to put them together in a way that feels like YOU. And once you figure that part out, getting dressed becomes so much easier.

Like, dramatically easier.

If this is feeling familiar, then this post is for you girl. I am going to break down the reasons most of us struggle with getting dressed and share some real, practical ways to make it click. Because "what do I wear" should not be the hardest question of your day.

Why Getting Dressed Feels So Hard

Okay so let me just validate something real quick. If you struggle with this, you are not alone and you are not bad at fashion. There are actual reasons why picking an outfit feels impossible some days, and most of them have nothing to do with your clothes!

You have decision fatigue

By the time you are standing in front of your closet in the morning, your brain has already made a million tiny decisions and it just does not want to make another one. This is especially real for my fellow ADHD girlies who are already running behind and overwhelmed before the day even starts. Sound familiar? Same.

Your closet is not working with you

If your closet is a chaotic mess of random pieces with no real thread connecting them, of course nothing is going to feel like it goes together. It is not your fault, it just means your wardrobe needs a little bit of editing and intention behind it.

You don’t actually know your style

This is a big one. A lot of us buy things because they are cute on the hanger or because we saw someone else wear it, but we have never really sat down and figured out what OUR style actually is. And when you do not know your style, every outfit decision feels like starting from scratch.

You’re too concerned with what other people are thinking or wearing.

A harsh truth, but nobody care about your outfit as much as you do. The thing about knowing your own personal style is that it gives you the confidence to trust yourself, your taste and make a decision about what you want to wear. No matter the occasion.

Of course if it’s an event where there is a clear dress code, follow it out of respect, but otherwise don’t be afraid to make a statement. Resist the urge to ask the group text what they’re wearing. Wear what you really want to wear!

How to Actually Figure Out Your Style

Here’s the good news though. Figuring out your style is not as complicated as it sounds! You do not need to hire a stylist or spend hours on Pinterest (although no judgment if you do, I love a good Pinterest rabbit hole). You just need to start paying attention to a few things.

Save what catches your eye.

Start screenshotting or saving outfits that you are drawn to, whether that is on Instagram, Pinterest, or even people you see out in real life. After a while, you will start to notice patterns. Maybe you always save looks with earth tones. Maybe you are drawn to oversized silhouettes. Maybe you love a good accessory moment. Those patterns ARE your style, you just have not named it yet.

Look at what you already wear the most.

The pieces you reach for over and over again are telling you something. If you live in your jeans and sneakers, that is data. If you always gravitate toward dresses, that is data too. Your existing habits are actually a really good starting point for defining your style.

Think about how you want to FEEL.

This one is underrated. Style is not just about looking good, it is about feeling good. Do you want to feel put together? Relaxed? Trendy? Classic? When you dress for the feeling you want, the outfits kind of build themselves.

Take a style quiz

Okay yes I am biased here but hear me out. I built a free style quiz specifically for this reason, because I think figuring out your style should be quick and actually fun. It takes about 30 seconds, asks you a few questions about your preferences, and then gives you personalized outfit ideas that match your vibe. It is honestly one of the best ways to shortcut this whole process and I wish I had something like it years ago.

Build a Closet That Works For You

Once you have a better sense of your style, the next step is making sure your closet actually supports it. And no, that does not mean you need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe. It is more about being intentional with what you keep and what you add.

Edit what you have.

Go through your closet and pull out anything that does not fit, does not make you feel good, or just does not match the style you are going for. I know this part is hard (especially if you are emotionally attached to that top you bought in 2019 and wore once) but trust me, a smaller closet with pieces you actually love is SO much better than a packed closet full of maybes.

Invest in pieces that go with everything.

Think about the basics that can be mixed and matched across a ton of outfits. A great pair of jeans, a classic button down, a good sneaker. These are the pieces that make getting dressed easier because they work with almost anything else in your closet.

Add fun pieces intentionally.

Once your basics are solid, that is when you bring in the fun stuff. A printed skirt, a statement bag, a bold shoe. These are the pieces that make your outfits feel like YOU and keep things interesting without adding chaos to your closet.

Create Go-To Outfit Formulas

This is the part that changed the game for me. Instead of trying to come up with a brand new outfit from scratch every single day, I started creating outfit formulas that I know work and just rotate through them. It sounds simple but it seriously takes so much pressure off.

An outfit formula is basically just a combination of pieces that you know always looks good together. Like, jeans + a tank top + a layer (cardigan, blazer, jacket, etc). Or a midi skirt + a fitted top + boots. You are not wearing the exact same outfit every day, but you have a framework that makes it easy to get dressed without overthinking it.

The key is having formulas for different situations. You want a few for casual days, a few for when you need to look a little more put together, and a few for going out. That way no matter what your day looks like, you have something to fall back on.

And if you want outfit formulas that are actually tailored to YOUR style? That is literally what my outfit idea generator was built for. You can browse tons of outfit ideas and save the ones that work for you, sorted by style, occasion, weather, and more. It is like having a personal stylist in your pocket, except it is free and you can use it in your pajamas.

Stop Overthinking It

I think the biggest thing I want you to take away from this post is that getting dressed does not have to be stressful. Like, at all. The girls who always look put together are not spending hours agonizing over their outfits. They just have a system, even if they do not realize it.

They know their style. They have pieces that work together. They have go-to combinations they can fall back on. And they do not reinvent the wheel every morning. That is the whole secret.

And honestly? Once you get into a groove with this, getting dressed actually becomes fun again. You start seeing your closet differently. You feel more confident in what you are wearing. And you stop wasting time standing in front of your closet wondering what the heck to put on.
