23 Winter Fashion Trends Taking Over for 2026 / 2027

It's winter trend report time, my favorite kind of post to write! This year's list is a good mix, some pieces you probably already own a version of, and a couple that made me go "wait, we're doing this again?"

Same disclaimer as always. I don't expect you to love or wear every single one of these. Pick what actually sounds like you, add a piece or two, and let the rest scroll on by. This is purely informational, and not me saying you’re a big loser for not liking or partaking in all these trends. I surely won’t be!

Okay, let's get into the trends.

Faux fur

Faux fur is not going anywhere and honestly I hope it never does. Coats, trims, even bags are getting the fuzzy treatment this year, and it makes any outfit feel more expensive than it actually was.

Shearling coats

Shearling is having a real moment, and it's actually more of a casual, laid back cousin to the faux fur trend. It's the coat that looks like it belongs on a chic ski trip, even if the closest you're getting to snow is your driveway.

Funnel neck jackets and coats

The funnel neck is the jacket shape of the season, that high structured collar that just makes an outfit look a little more finished. Zip it all the way up for a sleek look or leave it open over a sweater.

Military coats

Structured, boxy, a little bit utilitarian. Military inspired coats have a real shape to them, which makes a big difference against all the slouchy stuff we've been wearing the last few years.

Capes and ponchos

This one is a little more out there, but if you want to feel dramatic walking into Target, a cape or poncho will do it. They're also secretly great for days you don't feel like dealing with sleeves.

Balaclavas

As a skier, this was one I was raising my eyebrows at when I first heard about it. But balaclavas have gone from ski slope to street style staple this year, and the softer knit versions actually look really cute, not "I'm about to rob a bank" cute, just regular cute. Consider it your beanie's cooler, slightly more dramatic sister.

Wide leg tailored trousers

Wide leg trousers are the trend that keeps proving it's not going anywhere, and this year they're leaning more tailored and less baggy. They're also just genuinely comfortable, which is really all I ask of my pants at this point in my life.

Barrel jeans

Barrel jeans have had a huge year, curved out at the thigh and tapered at the ankle, and they're still everywhere right now. It’s been a thing for a few seasons though, so if you're barrel jean curious, I'd say get in while it's still hot.

Pencil skirts

With capri pants making their grand return the past few springs, this is not surprising! Pencil skirts are back, with their length hitting around the knee. Especially paired with a blazer for a matching set moment. They're also just an easy way to look dressed up without actually having to think that hard about an outfit.

Colorful tailored leather

Leather is moving away from the edgy moto jacket era and into something more tailored and a little more colorful, a blazer or trouser in a rich color instead of just basic black.

Suede

Suede is having a huge season, especially in boots and jackets. It gives that same luxe texture as leather but somehow always feels a little softer and more approachable.

Argyle

Argyle is back and actually feels less grandma this time around, a chic sweater vest or a full sweater in a muted color palette instead of anything that reads too Clueless.

Plaid and checks

Plaid and checks are making their way back into rotation this season, whether it's a full skirt, a blazer, or just a scarf. You get a print without committing to something too bold.

Rugby shirts

Rugby shirts are an easy way to bring in that preppy, collegiate energy without trying too hard. Throw one on with jeans and you're basically dressed for any casual outing you have on your winter calendar.

Peplum

Peplum is back in a smaller, more subtle way this time, mostly showing up on jackets and blouses rather than full peplum dresses. It's a flattering detail that adds shape without adding bulk. And, personally, as someone who is built like a surfboard, I’m a fan of anything that gives me the illusion of shape.

Pop of red

A pop of red anywhere in your outfit, a bag, a boot, a sweater, is such an easy way to break up all the neutrals we default to in winter. One small piece and the whole outfit reads different.

Pop of animal print

Leopard, cow, snake, zebra, all of it is everywhere right now, and the trick this year is treating it like a neutral instead of a statement. Pair an animal print piece with simple, plain basics and let the print do the work.

Triangle scarves

Triangle scarves are apparently having a real takeover right now, tied under the chin (like the balaclava we mentioned earlier in the list) or knotted at the neck for a dainty, effortless vibe. It's giving old money, just cozier.

Slouchy bags

Structured, stiff bags are taking a back seat to something softer and more slouchy this season. They just feel more relaxed and lived in, which honestly matches my whole vibe as a person.

Vintage bags

Vintage and vintage-inspired bags are all over the place right now too, whether that means actually thrifting one or buying a new bag that just looks like it has history. There's something about a bag with a little bit of a story that feels more special than something straight off a shelf.

Pointed-toe Ankle Boots

A sleek pointed toe is replacing the rounder, chunkier boot shape we've seen the last few seasons. Especially with a kitten heel. It's a small change, but it makes a boot look sleeker and more grown up right away.

Shearling Boots

Really lean in to the winter of it all and some shearling to your boots for a cozy vibe. Warm, comfortable, and they still look like an actual outfit choice and not just what was closest to the door.

Statement Socks

Peeking a cute sock out from under a flat or loafer adds a little preppy, academia energy to an otherwise simple shoe. Bonus points if the socks have any kind of pattern or trim.
