How to Look Appropriate but Chic at a Black Tie Event
Recently as I mindlessly scroll my FYP on TikTok I keep coming across videos of girls asking for help choosing a dress to wear to a black tie wedding.
I’m not sure if it’s rage bait or they truly don’t know what you’re supposed to wear to a black tie wedding, but 90% of these videos the dresses are wayyyy off base. (Don’t worry, the comments sections are alive and well and definitely not shy about letting these women know to head back to the drawing board).
It inspired me to do a deep dive into what actually is considered appropriate for a black tie wedding, since we want to look chic but definitely don’t want to ignore the dress code!
So, if you’ve been invited to a black tie wedding or event, and you’ve been wondering what to wear, this is the post for you!

Black tie dress codes can be tricky if you don’t go to events like this often. The goal is to look elegant without feeling overdone or uncomfortable all night.
Here’s how to make it work:
Go for a Floor-Length Gown
A black tie wedding guest dress almost always means long. Maxi gowns instantly feel more formal. Look for rich fabrics like satin, chiffon, or velvet. If you’re not into full ball gowns, a sleek column dress or one with a subtle slit can still feel elevated. Long dresses also look amazing in photos, which is always a bonus.
Keep Colors Elegant and Season-Appropriate
You can’t go wrong with jewel tones in fall and winter or soft pastels in spring. Black is always safe and chic. Just skip anything too bright neon. If the couple has a wedding color palette, you might even sneak that in for a thoughtful touch. Choosing a color that flatters your skin tone will make you feel even more confident all night.
SHOP THE LOOK:
Add Statement Jewelry
Nothing too costume-y. But chandelier earrings, a bold cuff bracelet, or a delicate layered necklace are perfect. Just pick one main statement piece so you don’t look over-accessorized. Jewelry is also an easy way to make a simpler dress feel instantly more formal.
SHOP THE LOOK:
Choose Dressy Heels You Can Actually Walk In
Yes, stilettos look amazing. But remember, you might be standing for the ceremony and dancing for hours. A block heel or dressy platform can still look formal while keeping you comfortable. Your future self will thank you when you’re still on the dance floor at midnight.
SHOP THE LOOK:
Carry a Small Clutch
A crossbody bag is too casual for a black tie look. Go for a beaded, satin, or metallic clutch that fits just your essentials. It’s a small upgrade that makes the whole outfit feel pulled together. Bonus points if it has a little sparkle for an extra glam touch.
SHOP THE LOOK:
Consider a Wrap or Shawl
Even summer weddings can have chilly air-conditioned ballrooms. A silk wrap, faux fur stole, or sheer capelet can add drama and warmth without ruining your dress silhouette. It’s also a fun way to play with texture and make your outfit look more luxe.
Hair and Makeup Matter
This is not the time for your everyday low bun or barely-there makeup. Try loose curls, a sleek ponytail, or an updo. Pair with either a bold lip or a smokey eye to keep it chic. Don’t forget a good setting spray so your look lasts through every photo and dance.
A black tie wedding is basically fashion heaven. Pick a dress that feels special, add glam accessories, and you’ll fit right in with the formal vibe. The key is balancing elegance with comfort so you can enjoy the night without fussing over your look. You’ll feel amazing and be ready for all the photos, champagne toasts, and dance floor moments.
