The Worst Fashion Advice That's Outdated (& What to Follow Instead)
Now that we're in the 2020's, some fashion advice just needs to go. Like, yesterday.
You know the rules I’m talking about, the ones your mom probably followed religiously and also instilled in you since you could choose your own outfits.
And these "rules" might have made sense decades ago, but I don't think they don’t belong in your closet now.
So here are the worst outdated fashion rules we’re officially done with! Plus what to do instead to look cute and feel confident.
Rule: Don’t Wear White After Labor Day
Okay, who made this rule, and why did we all listen?
White is chic year-round. I love rocking white jeans off season. And a white sweater is always cute and definitely an every season closet staple.
Try this instead: Mix white with warm tones like camel or burgundy in the colder months. Or you can even go for monochromatic look. It looks luxe, not off-season. White denim with a cozy sweater also always looks cute. Don’t let the calendar tell you what to wear.
Rule: Your Bag and Shoes Have to Match
This one feels straight out of 1995. Matching everything can look a little stiff.
Try this instead: Let your accessories contrast. A tan bag with black loafers? Still a vibe. Leopard print flats with a pink purse? So fun. Mismatched can actually look more modern. It shows personality and feels less forced.
Rule: You Can’t Mix Prints
Print mixing can totally work. You just need a few easy tricks.
Try this instead: Start with one bold print and pair it with something smaller or more neutral. Like a striped tee with a floral skirt. Keep colors in the same family to tie it together.
Rule: Petite Girls Can’t Wear Maxi Dresses
Not true at all. It’s all about fit and proportion.
Try this instead: Look for maxis that are fitted at the waist or have a slit to break up the fabric. Heels or platforms help too if you want the extra height. Tailoring makes a huge difference. And don't shy away from bold prints either.
Rule: Plus Size Women Should Avoid Bright Colors
Please no. Every body looks good in color.
Try this instead: Pick shades that make you feel good. A bold dress in your favorite color is way more stylish than hiding in head-to-toe black. Confidence is the real secret. Bright colors can highlight your glow.
Rule: Denim on Denim is a No
We call it a Canadian tuxedo now and yes, it’s cute and currently trending.
Try this instead: Mix denim washes for contrast. A light chambray shirt with dark jeans is classic. Add a statement belt or earrings to break it up. Try adding a pop of color with shoes or a bag. Denim on denim is a power move now.
Rule: Sequins Are Only for Night
If you want to wear sequins to brunch, do it.
Try this instead: Tone it down with casual pieces. A sequin tank with jeans and sneakers? Effortless sparkle. Even a sequin skirt can work with a chunky knit sweater. It's all about balance.
Rule: You Have to Dress for Your Age
Style isn’t about age. It’s about what makes you feel amazing.
Try this instead: Wear what fits your vibe, not a number. If you love crop tops, wear them. If you like oversized blazers, go for it. You make the rules now. Style doesn’t come with an expiration date.
Rule: Don’t Repeat Outfits
This one is just exhausting. And wasteful. And expensive... I could go on!
Try this instead: Rewearing pieces is smart and sustainable. Style them differently with shoes or accessories and call it a new look. Nobody remembers what you wore last week. And if they do, it probably means you looked amazing.
Rule: You Have to Be Trendy to Be Stylish
Trends come and go. You don’t need every "it" item.
Try this instead: Find what works for you and stick with it. Style is personal. It’s okay to skip the micro mini skirt if it’s not your thing. Focus on what flatters and feels good. True style never feels forced.
