13 Trends That Are Out of Style Fall & Winter 2025–2026
If you know me at all, then you know I love a good trend! And I know a lot of you agree since my most popular posts every season are my fashion trend roundups!
Check out what is trending for Fall 2025 [here] and Winter 25/26 [here].
But, although trends are fun, I think it's totally boring to be a total slave to the trend cycle! I usually pick a few trends and treat myself to 1 or 2 per season, but otherwise keep my wardrobe pretty classic.
And the other problem with trends is that they don't last forever!
So if you are looking to upgrade some trends of fall and winters past that you loved, then check out these 13 cold weather fashion trends that are "out of style" and suggestions of an upgrade that feels more current for each one!
1. Taupe Zip-Up Booties ❌
These had a good run, but it’s time. The side-zip booties with the chunky wooden heel are feeling dated now.
Try instead: A sleek chocolate brown suede ankle boot. I love the clean lines and minimal hardware. It dresses up anything and this neutral color is everywhere this season.
2. The Classic Shacket ❌
Oversized shirt-jackets were everywhereeee the past 5 years or so. But this season, they’re being replaced by something more structured.
Try instead: A canvas barn jacket with contrast collars. It gives New England chic without trying too hard.
3. Basic Black Leggings ❌
We lived in them for years. But plain black leggings are starting to feel flat.
Try instead: Flare leggings. They're comfier than jeans but way more current. PS- Personally, I'm not giving my plain leggings up! But if you're looking for an upgrade that feels more in style, then this what the cool girls are wearing.
4. Distressed Skinny Jeans ❌
Ripped skinnies are officially retired. They’re hard to style and don’t work with most trending shoes.
Try instead: Slim straight-leg jeans in a clean, mid-wash. So much easier to wear with loafers, sneakers, or boots.
5. Infinity Scarves ❌
Remember these? They’re warm, yes, but kind of bulky and awkward now.
Try instead: An oversized plaid scarf you can drape, wrap, or knot. Looks effortless, not outdated. This version is worn truly as an outerwear piece and not like a more permanent accessory like the infinity scarf was.
6. Tall Ugg Boots ❌
Sorry to this icon, but the tall Ugg boot look is over (again).
Try instead: The low-cut Ugg Tasman or cozy slippers with structure. Still warm. Way cooler.
7. No-Show Socks ❌
Low ankle socks are fine for workouts. But fashion-wise? They’re not it for fall. Millennials are getting dragged for this one!
Try instead: Cozy crew socks. Let them peek out of your sneakers or boots. It adds texture and warmth.
8. Big Logo Belts ❌
Big buckle belts with huge designer logos are feeling loud and overdone. Especially the big Gucci belt which was THE trend circa 2019.
Try instead: A thin leather belt with a subtle logo detail (or no logo at all). The vibe is quiet luxury.
9. Over-the-Knee Boots ❌
This style of OTK boots was THE thing for a while, but now they’re hard to pair with trending silhouettes. Also I could neverrrr get mine to stay up over my knee. It was a no for me even when they were trending.
Try instead: Croc-embossed knee-high boots. Still statement-y, just fresher. Western styles are trending but it doesn’t necessarily even have to be that style. A simple sleek riding boot style also works.
10. Minimalist White Sneakers ❌
Plain white canvas sneakers are comfy, but they’re not making a statement anymore.
Try instead: Retro sneakers in bold colors. Adidas Sambas or Gazelles are having a moment.
11. Quilted Chain Bags ❌
That puffy, boxy designer look with gold chain straps is feeling too try-hard.
Try instead: A mini shoulder bag in a simple shape. Think sleek, timeless, and wearable.
12. Monogram Tote Bags ❌
Loud monogram totes (hi LV) aren’t giving off the effortless vibe anymore.
Try instead: Slouchy suede shoulder bags. Less structured. Way cooler. Way more quiet luxury.
13. Monogram Necklaces ❌
The swirly cursive nameplate necklaces are very sorority sister circa 2012.
Try instead: Layered gold chains with subtle initials or pendants. Adds depth without looking dated.
If you’ve got these "what's out" pieces in your closet, no stress. Trends come and go. But if you want to give your outfits a quick refresh, swap in a few of these updated picks. You’ll feel way more current without overhauling everything.
Pin this post, save your fave swaps, and share it with a friend who’s still rocking tall Uggs. No judgment. Just helping each other stay cute!
