Fall Chrome Nail Ideas That Are Worth the Extra Salon Charge
Chrome nails have completely taken over and I have zero notes.
This trend honestly reminds me of the “party nail” or “accent nail” trend that swept the basic bitch nation circa 2015 (getting a different color on one finger on each hand). It was groundbreaking at the time and all the trendy girls were doing it.
That’s how I feel about chrome now. And I am a sucker for a trend!
The other thing worth knowing is that chrome at the salon and chrome at home are two slightly different projects. Salon chrome is a powder buffed over cured gel, and it's what gets you that true mirror. At home you can get impressively close with the right products, and I'll tell you exactly how for each one.
Here are my favorite fall chrome nail ideas, what to ask for, and how to pull it off yourself.
The Neutral Chrome Flight
A different neutral on every nail, mixing creamy nudes with a smoky gunmetal chrome. It's the fall latte lineup and it's sneaky good if you can't commit to one shade.
Ask your nail tech for: a mismatched neutral set on short square nails, a few glossy nudes and browns plus one or two gunmetal chrome accent nails.
Do it yourself: paint each nail a different nude or brown, then do your accent nails with a silver or gunmetal chrome powder buffed over a dark gray base. Top coat everything so the finishes match in shine.
Shades to grab: OPI "Samoan Sand", OPI "Chocolate Moose", and Essie "Chinchilly" under a silver chrome powder.
Mocha Chrome
Cold brew in manicure form. That milky brown with a mirror finish is the fall version of the glazed donut and it looks expensive on every skin tone.
Ask your nail tech for: a mocha or "cocoa glazed" chrome, almond shape, a soft brown base with pearl chrome buffed on top.
Do it yourself: paint a milky brown base, let it fully dry (or cure if you're using gel), then buff a pearl or aurora chrome powder over the top with the little sponge applicator and seal.

Gunmetal Black Chrome
Full mirror black. This is the manicure equivalent of a leather jacket and it makes me feel like I have a much cooler personality than I actually do.
Ask your nail tech for: a black mirror chrome, almond or stiletto, using silver mirror powder over black gel for that reflective gunmetal look.
Do it yourself: black base, fully cured, then buff silver mirror chrome powder over it. The blacker your base, the more gunmetal it reads.
Shades to grab: OPI "Black Onyx" or Essie "Licorice" as the base, with a silver mirror powder on top.
Autumn Leaf Chrome
Red and orange metallic that shifts as your hand moves, exactly like the tree in my front yard in October. Very warm, very fall, very hard to look away from.
Ask your nail tech for: a red-orange or amber chrome, almond, with a warm copper or fire chrome powder over a red base.
Do it yourself: red base coat, cure or fully dry, then buff on a copper or gold chrome powder. The warmth of the powder over red is what creates that flame effect.
Shades to grab: OPI "Big Apple Red" or Essie "Playing Koi" as the base, finished with a copper chrome powder.
Wet Cherry
Deep raspberry with a shine so wet it looks like it's still drying. Cherry shades are having a serious moment and this one is the grown up version.

A French tip in glossy black over a glazed nude base. Somehow this manages to be both classic and a little bit menacing and I mean that as a compliment.
Ask your nail tech for: a black French on an almond nail, with a pearl chrome glaze over the nude base so the whole nail has that mirror sheen.
Do it yourself: sheer nude base with pearl chrome buffed over it, then use French tip guide stickers and swipe black across the tips. Top coat the whole thing.

Mulled Wine Chrome
Deep burgundy with a metallic finish, on short square nails. This is what I want on my hands from October through New Year's and I will not be negotiating.
Ask your nail tech for: a wine or burgundy chrome, short square, using a rose or copper chrome powder over a deep red base for that warm metallic pull.
Do it yourself: deep wine base, dry or cure fully, buff on a rose gold or copper chrome powder, seal with top coat.
Shades to grab: OPI "Malaga Wine" or Essie "Bordeaux" as the base, with a rose gold chrome powder.
Sage Pearl Chrome
A soft muted green with a pearly metallic finish. It's unexpected for fall, it looks incredible with gold jewelry, and nobody else at Thanksgiving will have it.

Ask your nail tech for: a sage or eucalyptus green with pearl chrome on top, almond or stiletto shape.
Do it yourself: paint a soft dusty sage base, then buff a pearl or white chrome powder over it. Go light on the powder so the green still comes through.
Shades to grab: a muted sage green base finished with a pearl chrome powder.
Pearl Chrome Polka Dots
A pearly nude base with white dots scattered all over. It's playful without being juvenile, and the chrome base keeps the whole thing from reading like a kids' birthday party.

Do it yourself: sheer nude base with pearl chrome buffed on top, then use a dotting tool and white polish to add dots. Space them out and don't aim for perfect, the slight unevenness is what makes it look hand done.

Tortoiseshell Chrome French
Tortoiseshell tips over a glazed nude base. It's the nail version of your favorite pair of sunglasses and it is unbelievably fall.
Ask your nail tech for: tortoiseshell French tips over a pearl chrome nude base, almond. Bring a photo, because tortoiseshell can go very wrong in the wrong hands.
Do it yourself: glazed nude base, then dot amber and dark brown blobs at the tips and blend them together slightly with a clean brush while wet. Top coat to smooth it out. Tortoiseshell stickers also exist and I won't judge you.
Shades to grab: base OPI "Bubble Bath" with pearl chrome, tips in an amber and a dark brown like OPI "Chocolate Moose".
Oil Slick Chrome
Purple and blue iridescence that shifts depending on how the light hits it. This one is genuinely mesmerizing and I lose entire minutes staring at my own hands.
Ask your nail tech for: an oil slick or duochrome set, almond, with an aurora chrome powder over a deep purple base.
Do it yourself: dark purple or plum base, cured or fully dry, then buff an aurora or "unicorn" chrome powder over it. A darker base gives you the strongest color shift.

Emerald Cat Eye
Black nails with a streak of green shimmer running through them, made with a magnet while the gel is still wet. It looks like a gemstone and it's the most dramatic thing on this list.

Do it yourself: you need magnetic cat eye gel polish and the magnet that comes with it. Apply the polish, hold the magnet close to the wet nail for a few seconds to pull the shimmer, then cure. Sounds fussy, is actually kind of addicting.

Vanilla Latte Chrome
The neutral pearl chrome everyone and their sister has right now, and for good reason. It's a nude that still looks like you did something.
Ask your nail tech for: a glazed nude or "vanilla chrome," almond, using pearl chrome powder over a warm nude base.
Do it yourself: warm nude base, dry or cure completely, then buff a pearl chrome powder over the top and seal. This is the easiest chrome on the list to get right at home.

Midnight Navy Chrome
Deep navy with a glassy metallic shine. Navy is criminally underused in fall and this finish gives it enough shine to feel special.

Ask your nail tech for: a navy chrome or high shine navy gel, short oval, with a light pass of silver or pearl chrome for depth.
Do it yourself: two coats of a rich navy, then a light buff of pearl chrome powder over the top, or just a serious glossy top coat if you're skipping the powder.

Bronzed Chrome
Full liquid metal in a warm bronze gold. These are your holiday party nails and they look incredible against a black dress.
Ask your nail tech for: a bronze or gold mirror chrome, almond, using gold mirror powder over a brown or bronze base for a true reflective finish.
Do it yourself: brown or bronze base, cured, then buff gold mirror chrome powder on until it goes fully reflective. Mirror powders need a completely smooth base, so buff any ridges first or they'll show.
Shades to grab: a warm bronze base finished with gold mirror chrome powder.
Rose Taupe Ombre Chrome
A cool mirrored mauve that sits somewhere between pink and brown. It's the neutral for someone who thinks nude nails are boring, which some days is me.
Ask your nail tech for: a rose taupe mirror chrome ombre, almond, with silver or pearl mirror powder over a mauve base.
Do it yourself: mauve or dusty rose base using the sponge method for the ombre effect, fully dry or cured, then buff silver mirror powder over it for that cool toned metallic. Seal well.

Full rose gold mirror on short square nails. Proof that chrome doesn't need length to look expensive, which is great news for those of us who type for a living.

Ask your nail tech for: a rose gold mirror chrome, short square, using rose gold chrome powder over a mauve or pink base.
Do it yourself: mauve pink base, cured or completely dry, then buff rose gold chrome powder over it until it turns reflective. Seal with a non-wipe top coat so it doesn't dull.
Shades to grab: a mauve pink base finished with rose gold chrome powder.
So there's your fall chrome lineup. If you're doing these at home, the two things that make or break it are a completely smooth base (buff those ridges) and a fully cured or fully dry layer under the powder, because chrome shows everything.
