Pink Nail Ideas for Every Mood (and Skill Level)

Pink nails are my personality at this point and I've made my peace with it.

Every single time I sit down in the salon chair with grand plans to be bold and different, the tech asks what I'm thinking, and I hear myself say "something pink?" like it's a question. I have a whole Pinterest board of edgy chrome and moody fall colors I will simply never get. Because pink is cute, pink goes with everything, and pink makes my hands look like I have my life together even when I very much do not.

The good news is "pink nails" is not one thing. There's a pink for the girl who wants barely-there and natural, a pink for the girl who wants to be seen from space, and about fifteen pinks in between. So whether you're booking an appointment or doing them yourself at your kitchen table at 11pm (hi, it's me), here are my favorite pink nail ideas, plus exactly what to ask for, how to fake it at home, and the specific shades to grab.

Just starting out DIY-ing your nails? Check out my post on how to do your own manicure at home.

Let's get into it.

Lip Gloss Nails

The "your nails but better" manicure. A sheer, glossy natural pink that looks like you just won the genetics lottery. This is my forever default and the one I get when I genuinely cannot make a decision.

Pink manicure idea featuring lip gloss nails.

Ask your nail tech for: a sheer natural pink, almond, as glossy as possible. Some salons call it a "clean girl" or "lip gloss" nail, or just a sheer pink gel overlay.

Do it yourself: one or two coats of a sheer milky pink, then a really good glossy top coat. The shine is what sells the whole thing.

Shades to grab: OPI "Bubble Bath" or Essie "Mademoiselle".

Strawberry Milk Aura

If a glass of strawberry milk turned into a manicure, here she is. That soft glowy pink in the middle reads expensive but it's really just a pretty little airbrush trick.

Pink manicure idea featuring strawberry milk aura.

Ask your nail tech for: an "aura" or "blush" set, a soft pink haze airbrushed into the center of a sheer nude base, almond shaped and topped glossy.

Do it yourself: paint a sheer nude base, then bounce a pink shade onto the center with a small makeup sponge and blend the edges out. Finish with a shiny top coat. It's weirdly forgiving, so don't overthink it.

Shades to grab: a sheer base like OPI "Mod About You" or Essie "Fiji", with a soft-but-pigmented pink like Essie "Flying Solo" dabbed in the middle.

Hot Pink French Tips

French tips, but make them LOUD. The nude base keeps it classic and the bright pink tip is doing all the talking.

Pink manicure idea featuring Hot Pink French Tips.

Ask your nail tech for: a French manicure with a hot or neon pink tip instead of white, on a short squoval or square. Tell them you want the tip line clean and a touch thicker than a traditional French.

Do it yourself: French tip guide stickers are your best friend here. Lay them down, swipe the pink across the tip, peel, top coat.

Shades to grab: base OPI "Bubble Bath", tips OPI "Hotter Than You Pink" or Essie "Haute as Hello".

Pink Glitter Ombré

This is the disco ball of pink nails and I mean that as the highest compliment. Glittery at the tips, fading down to almost nothing.

Ask your nail tech for: a pink glitter ombre or "glitter fade," heavy sparkle at the tips melting into a sheer pink base, almond shape.

Do it yourself: paint a sheer pink base, then sponge a pink glitter polish onto just the tips, building the density in a couple of thin layers. Top coat generously so it's smooth and not gritty.

Shades to grab: a sheer pink like OPI "Pink-ing of You" topped with a fine pink glitter topper at the tips.

Itty Bitty Heart Accents

Soft pink with tiny hot pink hearts scattered near the bottom. It's sweet without tipping into "I made these for a third grade Valentine's party."

Pink manicure idea featuring itty bitty heart accents.

Ask your nail tech for: a sheer or milky pink base with small hot pink hearts placed near the cuticle, one or two per nail, hand painted.

Do it yourself: base coat your pink, then use a dotting tool (or a bobby pin) to make two little dots in a V shape and drag them down to a point. Practice on paper first, I beg.

Shades to grab: base Essie "Mademoiselle" or OPI "Bubble Bath", hearts in OPI "Hotter Than You Pink" or any bright pink you already own.

Soft Pink French With a Little Bling

This is the "I have a wedding to go to" manicure. A barely-there pink French with a couple of tiny rhinestones so it feels done without being a whole production.

Ask your nail tech for: a soft baby boomer or sheer French, almond, with a few small silver rhinestones or pearls near the cuticle on one accent nail.

Do it yourself: do a sheer pink base, then use a tiny dot of nail glue to place rhinestones or micro pearls. Seal around them with top coat so they actually stay put through your day.

Shades to grab: Essie "Ballet Slippers" or OPI "Funny Bunny" for that milky sheer base.

Bubblegum Pink

Sometimes you don't want art, you don't want a gradient, you just want a loud, happy, glossy pink. This is that, and it's the most low maintenance pick on the whole list.

Pink manicure idea featuring bubblegum pink.

Ask your nail tech for: a solid bright bubblegum pink in glossy gel, on a short square or squoval.

Do it yourself: two coats of a creamy bright pink and a good top coat. That is the entire assignment.

Shades to grab: OPI "Pink Flamenco" or Essie "Watermelon".

Cherries On Top

Little cherries on a light pink base, and yes they're as cute as they sound. Very "I'm a fun person" without you having to say a word.

Pink manicure idea featuring cherries on top.

Ask your nail tech for: a sheer pink base with small hand painted cherries, a couple of red dots with a thin stem and a tiny green leaf, scattered across the nails.

Do it yourself: this one's a little project but doable. Pink base, two red dots per cherry with a dotting tool, a thin green stem, top coat. Or grab cherry nail stickers and save yourself the stress entirely.

Shades to grab: base OPI "Mod About You", cherries in a true red like OPI "Big Apple Red".

Opal Pearl Chrome

These look like the inside of a seashell and I'm obsessed. That pearly, almost iridescent pink shifts in the light, so people will absolutely ask if they're real.

Pink manicure idea featuring opal pearl chrome.

Ask your nail tech for: a pearl or "unicorn" chrome over a sheer pink base, almond, glossy. Show a photo so you get the iridescent finish and not a flat metallic one.

Do it yourself: this one needs chrome powder. Paint and fully cure (or fully dry) a sheer pink base, then buff an opal or aurora chrome powder over the top with the little applicator, then seal with top coat.

Shades to grab: base Essie "Ballet Slippers" or OPI "Funny Bunny", finished with an opal/aurora chrome powder.

Pink Glitter French Tips

A French tip, but the tip is sparkly pink. It's the upgrade your basic French has been waiting for, and the glitter hides a slightly wobbly line, so it's beginner friendly too.

Ask your nail tech for: a French manicure with a pink glitter tip instead of white, almond, on a sheer nude base.

Do it yourself: French tip guide stickers again, but swipe a pink glitter polish across the tips instead of white. The sparkle is forgiving if your line isn't laser straight.

Shades to grab: base OPI "Bubble Bath", tips in a fine pink glitter topper.

The Coquette Bow

Pearls, soft pink French tips, and one little 3D bow on the accent nail. This is peak girly and I will not be taking criticism about it.

Pink manicure idea featuring the Coquette bow.

Ask your nail tech for: a sheer base with pale pink French tips, a few micro pearls scattered near the cuticle, and a small 3D bow charm on one accent nail.

Do it yourself: pink French tips, place micro pearls with nail glue, and add a pre-made bow charm on your accent nail. Seal everything with top coat (around the charm, not over it, or it goes cloudy).

Shades to grab: base Essie "Mademoiselle", tips a soft pink like Essie "Fiji".

Dusty Rose

The grown up pink. This mauve-y rose is what I reach for when I want color but also want to look like a put-together adult. It goes with literally everything in your closet.

Pink manicure idea featuring dusty rose.

Ask your nail tech for: a dusty rose or mauve pink, glossy, on short round or natural-length nails.

Do it yourself: two coats of a creamy mauve pink, top coat, done. Great pick if your hands are not photo-ready (mine never are).

Shades to grab: Essie "Lady Like" or OPI "Suzi Shops & Island Hops".

Cherry Blossom Florals

Soft pink florals that look hand painted because they are. This is the manicure that makes people assume you have a delicate, refined personality. Let them think it.

Pink manicure idea featuring Cherry Blossom Florals.

Ask your nail tech for: a sheer pink base with pink cherry blossom flowers, small five-petal florals with a tiny gold or pearl center, on a couple of accent nails.

Do it yourself: honestly, this is an advanced one. If you're determined, use a small detail brush for petals and a dotting tool for centers. Otherwise, floral nail stickers exist and they're really good now.

Shades to grab: base OPI "Mod About You", flowers in a brighter pink and white.

Glazed Donut Pink

You've seen these on every It Girl on the internet. The glazed donut, but pink. That milky, lit-from-within shine is the entire point.

Pink manicure idea featuring glazed donut pink.

Ask your nail tech for: a "glazed donut" finish over a milky pink base, almond, using a pearl chrome powder for that wet glazed glow.

Do it yourself: same chrome powder situation as the opal pink. Milky pink base, buff a pearl chrome powder on top, glossy top coat. Keep the base soft and milky, not bright.

Shades to grab: base OPI "Funny Bunny" or Essie "Marshmallow", finished with a pearl chrome powder.

Pink Swirls

Squiggly pink swirls in a couple of shades, very retro, very fun. It looks complicated but it's really just a few wavy lines, which is exactly my speed.

Pink manicure idea featuring pink swirls.

Ask your nail tech for: abstract pink swirls, a mix of light and bright pink wavy lines over a sheer base, almond.

Do it yourself: sheer base, then use a thin striping brush to draw loose wavy lines in two pink shades. Wobbly is fine, that's the look. Top coat to smooth it out.

Shades to grab: light swirls in Essie "Fiji", bright swirls in OPI "Hotter Than You Pink", over an OPI "Bubble Bath" base.

Starry Pink Jelly

A squishy pink jelly finish with tiny white stars sprinkled on top. The jelly look is that sheer, see-through, candy-coated vibe, and it's so good on every skin tone.

Pink manicure idea featuring starry pink jelly.

Ask your nail tech for: a pink jelly or sheer pink build, almond, with small white celestial stars hand painted across the nails.

Do it yourself: build up a sheer pink in a few thin coats for that jelly depth, then add little white stars or crosses with a detail brush (or a star sticker). Top coat.

Shades to grab: a sheer pink like OPI "Pink-ing of You", stars in white.

Hot Pink Jelly

Same squishy jelly idea, but cranked all the way up to a juicy hot pink. This is summer in a nail and I will be getting it on repeat.

Pink manicure idea featuring hot pink jelly.

Ask your nail tech for: a hot pink jelly or sheer bright pink, built up so it still looks a little see-through and glassy, almond or stiletto.

Do it yourself: layer a sheered-out bright pink in thin coats until you get that glassy candy finish. Don't go fully opaque, the see-through quality is the whole vibe.

Shades to grab: OPI "Pink Flamenco" sheered out, or any jelly-finish bright pink.

Full Coquette

This is everything-girly thrown at one set: bows, hearts, lace, pearls, soft pinks and whites. It's a lot and that is the point. If your aesthetic is "ballerina who also really loves a bow," welcome home.

Pink manicure idea featuring full coquette.

Ask your nail tech for: a mixed coquette set, each nail a little different, with hand painted bows, a heart, soft lace detail, and a few pearls in pink and white. Bring a reference photo for this one for sure.

Do it yourself: mix and match what you can manage. A French nail, a bow nail, a heart nail. Use stickers and 3D charms where freehand feels like too much (zero shame in it).

Shades to grab: soft pinks and white like Essie "Ballet Slippers", OPI "Funny Bunny", plus a brighter pink for accents.

Pink-on-Pink French

A French tip, but instead of white, the tip is a slightly deeper pink than the base. Tonal, soft, and somehow more interesting than a regular French. This might be my actual favorite on the list.

Pink manicure idea featuring pink on pink French.

Ask your nail tech for: a pink-on-pink French, a soft pink base with a slightly brighter or deeper pink tip, almond, with a clean tip line.

Do it yourself: French tip guides, soft pink base, then a deeper pink swiped on the tips. The two shades being close together is what makes it look expensive.

Shades to grab: base Essie "Fiji", tips in a deeper pink like Essie "Flying Solo" or OPI "Tagus in That Selfie!".

So that's the pink nail lineup. Whether you're a sheer-and-natural girl, a bubblegum pink girl, or a give-me-all-the-bows girl, there's a pink in here with your name on it. Screenshot your favorites for your next appointment, or grab a couple of the shades and make a night of it at home (wine optional but encouraged).
