How To Decorate Your Home On A Budget
Alright let’s kick this off the CHEAP decorating tips first!
1- Know where to shop!
Ya gotta know the heavy hitters when it comes to home decor and home furnishing on a budget! Below I am going to list the absolute BEST places to shop for budget friendly things for your home!
Amazon - they’ve got everything under the sun, amazing prices, and free 2 day delivery for most things if you’re a Prime member. Hard to beat! (I have a whole post on Amazon decor for your living room if you want to check that out here!)
Target- If you love cheap and trendy home finds, welcome home. Target is IT. I drool over their home goods selection on the daily!
Overstock- OK has anyone had an issue with Overstock? Because I never have! Every time I order stuff for the home from there I get a great price and always LOVE the quality. The selection is also amazing. One of my favorite places for sure.
Mark & Day- Hands down, my FAVORITE place to buy area rugs on the cheap. Nobody beats their prices but they have all the same, trendy area rugs as all these other stores! If you’re on the hunt for affordable area rugs, this is it! PLUS they gave me an exclusive discount code for my blog readers! KATIE10 gets you 10% off your purchase there! Yay!
Home Depot- Home Depot has some sneaky good stuff at sneaky good prices! I honestly never used to equate Home Depot as budget friendly until I owned a home and started looking for furniture and decor and TBH Home Depot has been really surprising!
Wayfair- Prices are fantastic, but it can definitely be hit or miss as far as quality! Be sure to read the reviews and even google the name of the product you’re considering buying to see if any home or lifestyle bloggers have done a post about it! I have LOVED some things from Wayfair and then I have had some absolute trainwreck disasters.
Walmart- Of course Walmart, they have everything!! The prices are so good! Just definitely check the reviews or go in-store to be sure you’re buying something more quality because they do have a lot of strange off-brand third party sellers these days when you shop online. (They’re sort of morphing into Amazon, but it seems like their third party sellers aren’t quite as reliable as Amazon’s)
HomeGoods- AKA HEAVEN ON EARTH. You can’t shop their stuff online, only in-store but everything is the cutest and the cheapest and it’s FANTASTIC. So many things in my home are from there. I highly recommend buying throw pillows at HomeGoods. My favorite thing to buy there!
Kirkland’s- Kirkland’s is SO GOOD. They have so many cutesy trendy finds for your home! They even have a good selection of affordable dupes of the Anthropologie Primrose Mirror that every basic bitch is obsessed with having in their home LOL. My home has zero space for one right now, but maybe in the future!
2- Know WHEN to shop
Knowing WHEN to shop certain items for you home can really help you save money! Below I will list some tips for you to ensure the best timing possible to score the best deals on home items you’re looking for!
Know when the major sales are:
HOLIDAYS- This includes, New Years, Columbus Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Halloween, Black Friday-Cyber Monday. Oh and don’t forget any seasonal decor is always best right after that holiday or season ENDS!
Amazon Prime Day- for 2021, the sale will be taking place in June! It is typically in July, and with the pandemic last year it actually got pushed til October for 2020, but you can usually expect that sale to crop up in the summer months! This sale always results in other big retailers doing sales at the same time: namely, Walmart and Target! So it’s a great time to try and snag some home-related deals!
Way Day: Wayfair has a huge annual sale, typically in April of each year! Lots of home related deals to be had.
Overstock Sales: Overstock does it’s biggest sale, Overstock Customer Day, in October every year. It also has two semi- annual sales per year.
Know what time of the year certain home items are cheapest:
January: Best time to buy furniture in general as well as bedding!
May: The best time to buy office furniture!
June: The best time of year to buy paint. (never underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint!)
July: The best month!! Best time to buy home decor and another great time of year to purchase furniture
October: The best time to buy patio furniture
Now let’s talk some even CHEAPER decorating tips for your home !
3- DIY instead of buy!
Of course this is easier for those of us who are skilled in the crafty or handy areas! But even for those of us who aren’t so confident in our DIY skills, there are things you can EASILY do yourself that do not require much skill at all.
My favorite example: DIY wall art! An easy DIY decorating idea! I created this sign for my baby’s nursery for around $36 by simply using a cute font on Canva (a free graphic design app) and printing it out at Walgreens. Then I bought a super cheap movie poster frame from Target. Way cheaper than spending over $100 on it already made at Etsy! It was an easy way to get the same look without having to break the bank. You can see the comparison below!
4- Focus on the little things
Small touches can make a big difference! Some small but easy decorating idea for sprucing up your space:
Throwing a couch cover over an old or borrowed couch is way cheaper than buying a whole new couch!
Buying new throw pillow covers for your existing throw pillows
Buying a new rug to change up a space
Re-painting! You can re-paint the walls in a room, re-paint old furniture using chalk paint, re-paint kitchen cabinets, etc! A new and fresh coat of paint can totally reinvent your space! We did this in my living room and it looks SO GOOD!
Wall decals! A super cheap but fun way to add a fun accent to any space! I did this in my baby’s nursery and it came out great! It’s a fun focal point for the room now, and it was a whole lot cheaper than wallpaper!
Switch out the curtains ! New curtains can totally change up a space with minimal work and cost involved!
Change out your lighting or light fixtures. Buy new lamp shades! Or, get some new light fixtures! We just did this in our dining room and it totally changed up the space to look more trendy and modern! Amazon has a ton of options under $100 too!
Install new hardware- to your cabinets, dressers, doors, etc!
And lastly the absolute CHEAPEST decorating tips for your home!
5- Rearrange your furniture and decor
For the girl who is really looking to save money! Yes you can totally change up a space by rearranging what you already own! Move the couch over to the other side of the room. Switch up the wall decor or move that mirror in your bedroom over to the living room. Switch out the photos in your frames with new ones. You can totally get creative here and actually transform your space without buying a single thing! You don’t have to be a professional interior designer to do this well. Think of what you want the focal point of the room to be, and arrange things from there.
6- Buy your decor and furniture second hand
This is a sneaky good way to get your decor and furniture on the super cheap or FREE. Check out your local thrift store, a flea markets, or go to a garage sale or a yard sale or estate sale in your area and you’d be surprised at what. you can find!
If you don’t want to go in person, you can even do this online! There’s Facebook Marketplace, OfferUP, or even Ebay for decor and furniture that’s used! You can even sell your stuff on these places, then use the money you get from that to buy new or used stuff for your home!
