How To Start Your Fashion Blog This Weekend

So you’ve been quarantined long enough now that you’ve decided it’s finally time! You want to start your fashion blog! Congratulations! Deciding to start is a HUGE DEAL. You feel ready and passionate enough about fashion blogging that you want to jump in and start sharing your style with the world.

But where on earth do you even start?? I’ve broken down the first things you need to tackle before you can hit publish on your first official blog post!

  1. Name your blog! It makes it feel so official. You can just go with your own name, but if you want to be a little more creative than that, think of what your blog is all about. What name would truly represent your unique personality and style? TIP: do a quick Google search to see if any other fashion blogger is already using the name you choose

  2. So now you thought of a great name, and you know nobody else is using it, so you gotta claim your domain and social media handles!! TIP: Even if you don’t even plan on using some of these social media sites, claim your name anyways! You never know what the future holds. Maybe you were meant to be a YouTube star! Or maybe Linkedin will become the new hotspot for fashionistas. Who really knows! But you want to be prepared in case your plan to market your blog ever pivots in a new direction!

  3. Make a game time decision about WHERE you want to blog. Do you want to pay to start a website? Do you want to be a microblogger who just shares her finds on Instagram? Do you want to do a little bit of everything? Think about what makes the most sense based off of your skills, budget, and vision! TIP: My advice is to at the very least start focusing on Instagram and Pinterest. If your budget doesn’t allow for you to purchase hosting or a paid website platform— you can skip it or use the free version of WordPress, Weebly, Wix, or Blogger. (psst I suggest choosing WordPress)

  4. Figure out WHO you are speaking to and SERVING with this blog. If it’s just for you and your enjoyment, well then this step really doesn’t matter. But if you are starting this blog in the hopes of monetizing it and inspiring others, you’re going to want to attract your “ideal reader”. TIP: Think about what type of person would benefit from reading your blog and cater your content to speak to them!

  5. Create content— you don’t need a fancy camera, a professional photographer, a super well-designed website, or any other fancy expensive things you think! All you really need is your phone and a computer. And if you’re not starting a website and just focusing on social media for now, you don’t really even need the computer! TIP: Create content (written content, photos, and videos) that expresses your style and personality that also welcomes and serves your ideal reader/follower

  6. Publish your first piece of content! Woo! Ya did it, girlfriend! You set your blog up by figuring out your vision, who your ideal reader is and how you are going to serve them, and you created content that feels true to you! Now it’s time to share it with the world. TIP: Make your first post an “About Me” that let’s people in on who you are, what you hope to achieve, and ask them to follow along!
