The 15 Fashion Trends Going Out of Style in 2026
If you love following along what the fashion trends are, then it’s also really fun to know what is NOT in style. The fashion trend cycle fascinates me, especially seeing what sticks around for a few years and what only lasts a season.
If you just want to know the big trends for the year and keep it all fun and positive, be sure to check out my guide here on what will be trending for 2026.
But if you’re here for the tea on what is NOT trending in 2026, then stick around because I am going to dive right into what is going out of style!
Before I dive in, I always like to explain that I am not saying that you shouldn’t wear these things. Honestly, I like to pick a few things that are out of style that I loved when they were in style to mix into my wardrobe. It’s called having personal style!
I just really love following and sharing what the trends are, and you can do whatever you want with that information. Don’t shoot the messenger!
The Chunky Dad Sneaker
Wave goodbye to the white Balenciaga-style chunky dad sneaker and hello to it’s replacement Salomon shoes and New Balance. It’s a less chunky version, and my hot take is that Gen Z / hyper trendy girls seem to favor the Salomon and the more millennial mom-coded way to rock this trend is to opt for the New balance version. Millennial mom reporting for duty here so you can guess which pair I have!

Paper Bag Waist Pants
The paper bag waist pant was BAE (this saying is probably just as outdated lol). Back in 2019, you could catch me in paper bag waist pants, shorts, skirts, etc. Fast forward to 2026 and it seems volume has moved down in the form of wide leg and barrel style legs in pants.
When it comes to the waist, the trend seems to be moving more and more towards low-rise style as well. Remember when I said don’t shoot the messenger? I especially mean it right now! I will keep my high waists forever lol.
Shackets
THE CHOKEHOLD that shackets had us in for many falls. But I think 2025 saw the ultimate fall of the shacket and the rise of it’s eerily similar sister the barn jacket. She’s a little more structured, boxier, and has a contrast collar. But otherwise, there really isn’t much of a difference.
But that classic bold plaid shacket that saw a huge rise in popularity in 2021/2022? She’s out of style.
Tie-Dye
Okay I think we’re all okay with this one being out of style because we probably all get immediate flashbacks to being quarantined. This was such a pandemic trend. Etsy sellers had a field day. We were all stuck in our house and chronically online, and I think once the pandemic ended, this trend died with it.
I would say for sure the trend that has replaced tie-dye would be polka dots.
Long Cardigans
The long cardigan is out of style. Especially the ones of the color-block variety. Right now it is all about the boxy cropped styles or slightly oversized with some old money vibes with vintage looking buttons.

Chelsea Boots
The chunky chelsea boot with the rounded toe is no longer the style. Now, a more sleek bootie with a pointed or square toe is the vibe. It makes sense with the way the trends have changed when it comes to pants because a wide leg pant is going to look better with a sleeker shoe. When we were all about the skinny and slim jeans, a chunky boot made more sense.
Ripped Skinny Jeans
When I tell you I wore ripped skinny jeans like it was my job back in the day. And even though people keep threatening skinny jeans are coming back, I can confidently say that if they do, they won’t come back super tight to your body and with a million holes in the jeans. But right now the big trends in jeans seem to still be a wider leg fit, barrel jeans, and darker washes.
Wide Brim Fedora Hats
The basic influencer hat is no longer in style. If you’re a hat person, the current trends are bucket style hats, baseball caps, and with western vibes taking over the fashion trend sphere, cowboy hats!
Faux Leather Leggings
Back in 2020-2022 I had a blog post on the best faux leather leggings that got TONS of visits and sold at least one pair of faux leather leggings per day. Now? Crickets. The classic oversized sweater + faux leather leggings + boots look is no longer the trendy girl’s uniform.
For an updated way to add leather to your wardrobe try a leather bomber, wide leg leather pants, or leather boho bags.
Teddy Coats
The long teddy coat trend was huge, but now it’s been replaced by faux fur coats. A very close second is the sherpa / moto style funnel neck jacket that is very popular right now but has very similar vibes to the teddy coat of a few years ago.
Dressy Jogger Pants
A nicer jogger with heels used to be a whole look. But now when you want a dressier yet still comfy pant look, it’s more in style to go for a pair of wide leg trousers or satin pants.
Cold Shoulder
The cold shoulder was the definitive trend of 2016 era. She is very much retired as evidenced by my local thrift store’s sweater section having millions of them that I sift through weekly. When it comes to tops, the most recent trend is peplum! Which is a callback from 2012 era.
Fast Fashion
Fast fashion is losing popularity more and more each year. And for good reason! But if you’re a chronic shopper like me, this can be a hard one to let go of. Try thrifting (I promise you can find some gems!), renting sites like Nuuly, or creating a capsule wardrobe of more classic items you can easily mix and match.
This is a hard habit to break if you’re more of a quantity over quality SHEIN haul type of shopper. But I promise once you start adding in more sustainable and quality shopping habits, it gets easier and more fun to shop!
For me, I cut out SHEIN altogether. I always hit the thrift store first when I’m looking for something I need. And around the holidays or busier times of year in my social calendar I use Nuuly (click for $30 off your first month) instead of buying a fast fashion piece I will only wear once.
Pleated skirt
Pleated skirts seem to be on the outs! The pleated tennis skirt and pleated midi skirt I am seeing less and less of. The big skirt trend I am seeing is satin. From minis to maxis, satin is a safe bet if you’re looking for a similar sort of classy vibe that the pleated skirt gives. TBH I never loved the pleated skirt trend because it was annoying to de-wrinkle those pleats once they got messed up!

The French tuck
The French tuck was THAT GIRL for a long time, but now it’s a classic millennial style mistake (I have a blog post full of them here if you want to check it out)! I think it still works for some outfits, but the trend right now is a little oversized and no tuck!
I have a whole post on how to style an oversized shirt as well if you need some more guidance on how to rock this trend.
Okay so what do we think? Hard agree or disagree? Are you sad to see some of these go or are we happy to kick them to the curb? Let me know allll your hot takes in the comment section below!
